I bought a new Dell XPS 15 months ago, which is great, until I want to give a talk. I could not find any way to connect to a projector, which had a male VGA port only as most projector does. I even went to BestBuy and showed my laptop, they could not give an answer for sure. After I googled around, I found a mini Displayport to VGA adaptor is the answer (although some of them claim it does not work for some old projectors). After I tried both a monitor and projector, I think it works for all monitor and projectors as below (when presentation mode is not working),
1, Connect your XPS 15 to a projector with a mini Displayport to VGA adaptor.
2, Activate Multi-Monitor Option: Intel® Dual Display Clone. (presentation may not work as I tried)
Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel (see image below) -> Graph Options -> Display output options -> Intel® Dual Display Clone -> one of the option should works.
PS, I bought one from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002HU39BS
PS, the method above is also safe — you will not get a situation like no output to projector and black screen or background on XPS 15.
